The Arsenale Institute for Politics of Representation was initiated at the IUAV university in Venice in 2006 by Lewis Baltz, Marco de Michelis and Wolfgang Scheppe. Since 2009 it operates as an independent private entity.
The institute is engaged in research and development regarding the logical character and historic progress in society's deictic use of the image.
This central issue comprises questions concerning the economy of commodities and the use of representational theurgy in contemporary brand marketing, museology and the critique of ethnography, pictorial rhetorics and visualisation strategies in the societal formation of prevailing ideologies.
The archive held by the institute contains an extensive research collection pertaining to the avant-garde movements of the early 20th century with a main emphasis on documents and works related to Raymond Roussel, Marcel Duchamp, DADA, the Surrealists, Lettrists and Situationists.
The institute pursues its projects in dialogue with universities, museums and private foundations.
